New Zealand, is the home of Snapper Rock. As kiwis,
we are pretty passionate about our country, so thought
we better share some of our country info with you.
Located ‘down under’ in the South
Pacific Ocean it is about as close to the bottom
of the globe as you can get.
So what makes up New Zealand? Well, two islands – North
and South, 4 million people and breathtaking
scenery. With such a lot of space and not many
people New
Zealanders have a huge passion for the great
outdoors.
With
so much coastline, it is little wonder New
Zealanders love the water and have a massive
passion for ocean-going craft. New Zealanders
were at the forefront of yacht design and
racing during much of the 20th century, and
continued their dominance into this century.
Team New Zealand was the first non-USA syndicate
to have successfully defended the America's
Cup. They had a convincing win 5-0 against
challenger Prada in the 2000 Cup. In 2003
they lost to Alinghi but have since been
rebuilding their team for the next challenge
under the awesome leadership of Dean Barker – go
Deano!
New Zealanders have also won many Olympic
medals for yachting, windsurfing, kayaking,
and rowing. Add to the mix white water rafting,
jet boating, surfing,
and wave surfing – a number of these new sports being pioneered by New
Zealanders.
Many
New Zealanders like to follow in the footsteps
of perhaps the most adventurous Kiwi, Sir
Edmund Hillary, (the first person in the
world to conquer Mount Everest, the world’s
highest mountain) by partaking in old time
favorites of hiking and mountaineering. It seems this same adventurous spirits run deep
in many New Zealanders, and the greater the exhilaration
the better. Take AJ Hackett the kiwi who started
Bungy jumping – now who in there right mind
wants to attach themselves to a piece of elastic
and throw yourself off a bridge.!! Bungy jumping
has now been taken all over the world. Add into
the mix sky diving, parachuting etc – and
you’ll understand the term ‘crazy kiwis’. New Zealand has a diverse population — but
with some uniting features that make it unique
in the world. Our relatively isolated South Pacific
location and ruggedly stunning landscapes has
attracted many overseas filmmakers. New Zealand's
most famous
film production is undoubtedly Kiwi director
Peter Jackson's trilogy The Lord of the Rings,
filmed
entirely in New Zealand.
